Sword Between the Sexes: C.S. Lewis' Log Journey to Gender Equality, by Mary Stewart Van Leeuwen

Sword Between the Sexes
C.S. Lewis' Long Journey to Gender Equality
recording by Mary Stewart Van Leeuwen

Was C.S. Lewis a misogynist? The answer depends on which point in his life you choose to examine. Until fairly late in life, Lewis' view of gender relations was more influenced by his attraction to classical Greek philosophy, pagan myth and Jungian psychology than by 'mere' Christianity. However, with his late acquaintance and marriage to the gifted American writer Joy Davidman, this began to change, as can be seen in his last (but least-read) works, The Discarded Image, Till We Have Faces, and A Grief Observed.

MARY STEWART VAN LEEUWEN is professor of psychology and philosophy at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pa. She is also Resident Scholar at Eastern University's Hestenes Center for Christian Women in Leadership. Mary has been a senior editor for Christianity Today and she currently serves as an editor for The Reformed Journal. She has written, co-authored, and contributed to many books on gender and equality. She was also a recipient of Christians for Biblical Equality's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.
